Frequently-asked Questions:

Q: Is the MI3 tool a magnetically-oriented tool?

A: Yes. Our electronic tools use a three-component magnetometer and a three-component accelerometer to derive dip and azimuth readings. Dip readings will be accurate in all situations. Azimuth readings may be affected by local magnetic anomalies. Nevertheless, the diagnostic information provided by the MI3 tools can be used to diagnose and compensate for this problem.

Unlike other tools on the market, the magnetic diagnostic information lets you know that you have a problem with your azimuth - at last, you can trust the data.

Q: Can I log more than one hole in a single setup?

A: Yes. When you are finished with the first hole, simply request a NEW HOLE. You could use this facility to log a hole first going in (as you make up the rod) and and then going out (as you break the rod). Each of these runs would be stored as a separate hole.

Q: How do you attach the tool to a drill rod?

A: The tool must be placed away from magnetic interference (e.g., the drill rod), so there three options: (1) run the tool in a clear hole (RISKY!); (2) run the tool within a section of non-magnetic rod (EXPENSIVE!); or (3) run the tool through-the-bit on a wireline rig.

Most people use through-the-bit measurements. The tool is sent out thought the bit on aluminium (or other non-magnetic material) rods. We recommend at least 20 feet (6m) of extension rod, with 30 feet (9m) being ideal. If the the tool is run in a near-vertical hole, a simple landing nut that rests on the back of the bit or on the latch ring is an option. For other holes, a great way to set things up is to attach the extension rods to the lower latch body. Alternatively, you can screw an adapter in place of the core catcher on the core barrel that connects to the extension rod. In either case, the assembly can be pumped in or retrieved with the overshot and also provides the driller with positive feedback regarding latching.
